SOFTWARE and TOOLS

This page contains a list of software that has been suggest for organizational/collaborative use.
DIMDIM - This is a decent Web Conferencing tool, but it uses FLASH native to most browsers.  With too many different browsers of different vintages we way too many connection problems. We could never have a session in which DimDim worked for everyone.  We switched to WebEx. For our expereince in trying to make DimDim work, click here

  - Host can send WebCam (tiny screen) to remotes. 
FREECONFERENCECALL - Teleconference that can be free if you have free long distance service. Otherwise you pay long distance to a small Iowa town.  Used by the Alliance for its Mutual Aid Conferences, it works well.
  - Computer required only to setup account and bridge
  - Up to 96 participants in an telephone conference call
  - Up to six hours per reservationless conference
  - Free account requires only a name and an email address
  - Host receives a dedicated dial-in number and an access code
  - Only charges - long distance to western Iowa may apply
  - FREE call recording accessible by phone or computer
SALESFORCE.com - It's a CMS on cloud technology.  It's pretty slick - newsletters, outreach, volunteer management, etc.  They have a foundation program for nonprofits to get a 10-user usage of the product for free (have to be 501c3.)
Constant Contact - is a competitor to MyEmma (Nashville-based company that Walk Bike Nashville uses for their newsletter.)  It received high recom-mendations at the Alliance Retreat from many of the attendees.
SURVEYMONKEY - is a great tool for soliciting feedback from a wide audi-ence in a controlled and easy-to-use fashion.  For surveys less than 10 ques-tions, it's FREE.
WEBEX The web conferencing service costs $49/mo/HOST. However, like all conferencing services proiper use takes training, practice, and planning.

  - No software to install.
  - Host can share/collaborate on computer display.
  - Sessions can be record for fuuture review.

SKYPE This FREE service is primarily for audio conferencing.  Video confer-encing is possible for a maximum of five people with at Duo Core processors.
- Requires software download, computer, & internet connection
- Audio conferencing for up to 25 people.

COLLABORATION
GOOGLE GROUPS - are e-mail List Servers.  They have the advantage in that e-mail messages can be broadcasted to large numbers of recipients without the sender having to load/retain those e-mail addresses.  Furthermore, topics aka threads are archived on the Server.  Recipients don't need to clog their mail clients with old messages.  Just use the link on the Blog to go to the Server and open the appropriate thread.

Some of these List Servers are private were only people invited by the owner can view and contribute, while some are public were anyone with Internet Acess can view.  Please, before posting anything to a List Server, verify how it operates
INTERNET ASSETS - is a private DOC that lists all the Internet tools provided for use by the Directors of Bike Walk Tennessee and is organized by the following categories: List Servers, E-mail accounts, Networks, Web Conferencing, DOCS, WebSites, and Finance Accounts.

With private DOCS users must log-in as a person authorized by the Owner to share this DOC via their e-mail address.  Users with multiple e-mail addresses must use only that address to which the Owner sent the invitation.

ASSETS lists the following information for each of these tools: Resource Name. the Owner, the Administrator(s), Editors, Status, and Description.
- Owner is the person who created the Resource and established the preference for its use.  S/he has ultimate authority over the Resource.
- Administrator is the person established by the Owner to manage the Resource.  S/he is the person to contact with questions about the Resource including enrollment.
- Editor is the person permitted to made changes to the Resource.
- Status identifies if the Resource is Public (viewable by everyone) or private (viewable by people authorized to share it)
- Description tells the purpose of the Resource.

GOOGLE DOCS - is an on-line Office Suite containing the following appli-cations and others: Word Processing, Spreadsheets, and Presentations.  The power of DOCS is multiple people can view and contribute to its documents, depending on how the owner sets it up.and how s/he shares it.

Nearly all the interactive work of the Directors is in the form of a DOC and as such is private.  Each DOC is listed and accessible from the BWT Blog.
