Every year, Bike Walk Tennessee organizes a statewide delegation to travel to Washington D.C. for the National Bike Summit. The Summit offers an opportunity for Tennessee advocates to network with other advocates from across the nation, and learn more about the latest developments in policy, infrastructure, and educational programs across the United States. The National Bike Summit also provides participants with an opportunity to talk with members of Congress about federal policy.
Tennessee has been participating in the National Bike Summit since its inception in 2001, with participants representing their constituencies across the state of Tennessee.
The League of American Bicyclists' 21st annual National Bike Summit was held virtually this year, February 28 - March 3. Virtual presentations on biking and other related topics took place February 28 - March 2. Wednesday, March 3 was Lobby Day, a time for Summit bicycling advocates from across the nation to discuss upcoming federal transportation legislation with their Congressional members and staff.
During the Summit, the League provided all participants with education on proposed legislation along with messaging and specific asks that are priorities for biking and walking constituencies. The 2021 transportation legislation will determine policies and funding for the next 2-3 years that have significant impacts on safe and accessible biking and walking. This was an opportunity to learn about how federal legislation impacts us locally and hear from individuals working on this important issue at the national scale.
This all led up to Lobby Day on March 3, which gave Summit participants the opportunity to meet virtually with their Senators and Representative to advocate for biking and walking. To help further prepare participants for this conversation, Bike Walk Tennessee will be hosted virtual trainings prior to the event.
Membership to the League of American Bicyclists is $45. Bike Walk Tennessee encourages anyone who wants to participate in the Summit in the future to become a member of the League of American Bicyclists, not only to save money on Summit registration but also to receive access to discounts and special offers at many retailers and related businesses.
